Special attack is calculated with the types
Fire, Water, Electric, Dark, Psychic, Grass, Ice, Dragon

Attack is calculated with the types
Normal, Rock, Ground, Steel, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Fighting, Bug

This applies to 3rd Gen only.

In Fourth gen, as SM briefly touched on, it has been changed.

If a move is labelled as "Physical" it uses Atk and Def, eg Earthquake.

If a move is labelled as "Special" it uses Sp Atk and Sp Def, eg Fire Blast.

If a move is labelled as "Other" it uses neither, eg Swords Dance.
